The Garland Fire Department is always accepting applications for potential members. We are continually hiring individuals at this time. No experience is needed to start, but training is required to start responding to most calls. If you already have your fire certifications and/or EMS license, we’d be happy to have you join our team.

The Garland Paid On Call firefighter:
- Responds to alarms of structure, vehicle, or grass fires, traffic accidents, CO and fire/smoke alarms, medical incidents, and many other emergencies.
- Reports to and follows company officer’s instructions.
- Performs duties outlined in firefighting procedure for the suppression of fires such as: laying of lines, raising of ladders, ventilation, forcible entry, etc.
- Performs other duties in the line of rescue or first aid as required, including extricating victims from vehicles, confined spaces, or other rescue emergencies.
- Assumes certain responsibility for servicing and maintenance of fire equipment.
- When assigned and certified, will drive certain fire apparatus.
- When required, complete fire and medical reports for calls.
- Maintains fire station and grounds and facilities.
- Operates many different types of fire and medical equipment proficiently.
- May conduct training and instructional programs as part of weekly training.
- May assume command of the fire or emergency in the absence of an officer.
Member Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be close enough to the Garland station to respond in a timely manner. Not required to live in Garland’s response area.
- Read and speak English.
- Pass a background check.
- Valid US driver’s License.
- Before responding to fire-type calls, members must be, as a minimum, Utah Fire I certified, which includes Hazmat Awareness & Hazmat Operations. Fire II will be required once Fire I has been completed.
- We allow members to respond to medical calls only, which requires them to have or obtain a Utah Advanced EMT license.
The Garland Fire Department will provide or pay for training required for new personnel. Additional training to further your skill set at Garland Fire is also available, usually at no cost to personnel.
Members are paid an hourly wage per call basis for their service. Members must attend weekly training or make-up training on a regular basis. Drill nights are Thursday evening at 6:30 pm and usually last 1-1.5 hours.
